Can mash-ups cure social service stove-pipes?
Amid the economic downturn, a Web-based system that aims to simplify the task of applying for publicly funded health and social service programs has been inundated with applicants.
One-e-App, which was launched in 2004, has already served 2.2 million people in four states this year. That’s up from about 1 million applicants a year ago. Bonnie Wilbur, director of application solutions at The Center to Promote HealthCare Access, the California-based non-profit which manages One-e-App, said the mission of expanding healthcare access is particularly pressing in difficult times.
Data Mashups at AJAX World RIA Conference & Expo
At the 7th International AJAX World RIA Conference & Expo held June 22-23, 2009, in New York, Suresh Chandrasekaran, leader of sales and marketing in North America and APAC for Denodo Technologies, discussed the Enterprise Data mashup platform and how to build virtual data services. "The basic problem that Data Mashups solve is the integration of a lot of information," noted Chandrasekaran. "The function of the Enterprise Data mashup platform is basically to go across unstructured and structured data and have a common platform to create virtualized data services."
Data Mashups is a holistic approach to data integration that deliver virtualized or batch access to internal and external information as Data Services. It is also significantly faster and less costly but works with existing middleware. Chandrasekaran explored three design patterns for Data Mashups: a) Data Services to support Single View, b) Operational BI & Composite Dashboards and c) Web Automation for Partner Processes.
Mashups smooth bumps between citizens and services
Volunteering at a soup kitchen occasionally or hammering nails for Habitat for Humanity might have satisfied some people's altruism, but Bobbie Wilbur went one better. She started a new career. In 2005, using her talents from a successful stint as a conultant for Deloitte LLP, Wilbur helped create The Center to Promote HealthCare Access in Oakland, Calif. and develop its One-e-App, an online service that targets a vastly underserved market: people in need.
SOA Consortium Releases New Podcast Featuring Suresh Chandrasekaran, Denodo Technologies on “Data Mashups Accelerating the Delivery of SOA Value”
Suresh Chandrasekaran presented a customer service case study on using enterprise data mashups to accelerate the delivery of SOA value. Chandrasekaran spoke of the challenges to satisfy business demand for accurate, real-time information, brought on by the explosion of data sources, types and locations. Despite this growing data pool, the acceptable time to tap into this pool – time to value – is decreasing. According to Chandrasekaran, enterprise data mashups resolve this immediate data delivery dilemma across a wide variety of data sources including web and unstructured data, while also contributing to a longer-term SOA strategy.

In the collective imagination, the computers are busy merging into one grand, expansive database filled with minutiae about those pesky, emotive humans so that the machines will be ready for Sarah Connor. The database administrators and programmers know that the reality is more than a little bit creakier than this image -- even though they might use the image to pry some funding if they see a glint of malice in the eyes of the pointy-haired bosses.

Since Denodo is the only mashup software I’ve examined, I can’t compare it with its competitors. But I was quite impressed with what Denodo showed me. Basically their approach is to build specialized connectors, called “wrappers,” that (a) extract specified information from databases, Web sites and unstructured text sources, (b) put it into queryable structure, and (c) publish it to other applications in whatever format is needed. Each of these is easier said than done.

Why were Mashups and Composite Applications named one of the top 10 strategic technologies for 2008 and beyond? According to David Cearley, a Gartner analyst, “a strategic technology is something that has significant impact on a business – impact could mean driving an investment or pose a threat. If your competitors adopt one of these technologies “does that put you at a competitive disadvantage?”
