Developer of AutoCAD Recognized for Using Data Virtualization with Big Data to Create a Logical Data Warehouse to Enable Transition to Subscription Licensing

PALO ALTO, CA, January 14, 2016 - Denodo, the leader in data virtualization software, today announced that its customer, Autodesk, has been named the winner of the 2015 Ventana Research Leadership Award in the Big Data category. Autodesk, a global software corporation that develops software for the architecture, engineering, construction, manufacturing, media, and entertainment industries, is receiving this Technology Innovation Award for delivering exemplary use of data virtualization, which is powered by the Denodo Platform, along with big data.

The impetus for Autodesk’s technology initiative was its major revenue transition from a perpetual license-based model to a more modern subscription-based approach. Their legacy technology had been constructed largely around the perpetual license environment. With fundamental changes to their business model, they faced the challenge of having to redesign everything. What Autodesk needed was a solution that will adopt the new model cleanly while also keeping the old systems, which are still in active use.

“We came up a new solution architecture around a logical data warehouse that heavily uses data virtualization, and Denodo for that, to integrate new transaction sources, while keeping the old systems going the way they have,” said Mark Eaton, Enterprise Architect at Autodesk. “The data virtualization layer has helped our finance teams to conduct business as usual by continuing to do stocks reporting, interacting with the SEC, or complying with SOX regulations the same way as before. We are honored to have been recognized for our innovative use of data virtualization and big data in enabling our modern data architecture,”

The 2015 Leadership Awards bring forward the leaders and pioneers who have contributed to their organizations’ successes. These practitioners realize that successful business technology efforts requires a team effort guided by leadership.

“The challenges of architecting access to data across the enterprise that is traditionally approached with methods like data integration are not always the most effective approach as we found with our analysis of Autodesk for the 2015 Ventana Research Leadership Awards,” said Mark Smith, CEO and chief research officer of Ventana Research. “Autodesk approach to architect secured virtualized access to their data sources like SAP helped provide direct access to the information needed for a range of operational and analytical needs providing more timely and agile access. Congratulations to Denodo and their work with Autodesk for the Leadership Award.”

The Denodo Platform enables logical data warehouse architectures by virtually integrating existing BI with other front and back office, cloud, and newer big data systems to deliver unified views of the business critical data across the enterprise, and thus saving months of time and effort from having to redesign legacy systems, like in the case of Autodesk. The Denodo Platform’s sophisticated data modeling capabilities, intelligent caching, query optimization, fine-grain security, and support for complex, real-time analytics make it the leader in data virtualization.

“Data virtualization is the more agile data integration style that presents the relevant, interrelated data, in real-time and in a consistent format irrespective of underlying database systems, structures, and storage. Since it doesn’t replicate or store data, it delivers the complete, business-critical information,” said Ravi Shankar, CMO of Denodo. “Autodesk is a perfect example of how organizations can leverage data virtualization to create immediate and significant business results. We applaud them for their efforts and for being recognized as a winner.”
