Public institutions possess information systems that include multiple databases with relevant information, be it local, regional or central.

In Europe, with the current administrative decentralization, there is an increasing need for cooperation between different administrations. Thus, the need to integrate the existing information systems arises with the aim of sharing data among ministries, local governments or departments without losing the money already invested in them.

Public data sources generally have different query formats and schemas, which makes it difficult to integrate them, even within the same organization. Apart from the high costs involved, creating a new centralized data warehouse that agglutinates all the required information is not feasible for organizational reasons (data usually reside in different organizations).

Currently, exchange formats and interface standardizations (Web Services, XML) are becoming an option. However, the standardization effort does not resolve the combination of repositories and systems of each administration so that the required data and services can be exported.

Denodo EII solutions offer a unified query interface to access, in an integrated and real-time manner, all information that is distributed on the systems. The technology allows the development of this interface without the need for either source manipulation or information replication. The exchange formats and WebServices reside, therefore, in a layer that is independent from the system infrastructure; with the added flexibility of being able to implement quick adaptations, if the exchange requirements among organizations vary over time.

On the other hand, EII technologies also allow public organizations to offer administrative information query services to citizens, regardless of the fact that this information is distributed over different organizations: data taken from a census, tax payers, social security, progress of solicited administrative licenses, public jobs, aids, scholarships or subsidies, etc.

In short, the EII approach allows in both cases the preserving of the investments already made by different administrations and the implementation of new services to be accelerated.
