Nedbank

Simplifying its Data Infrastructure with a Logical Data Warehouse (LDW)

Testimonials

Jan Swanepoel
“We needed an interface that would allow users to connect to all the disparate databases, querying them and combining the data. Denodo, a data virtualization leader, was the obvious choice. As of today, Nedbank has virtualized its entire legacy data warehouse, data marts, and various other databases, making the Denodo Platform implementation at Nedbank one of the largest – if not the largest – logical warehouse on the planet.“

Nedbank Group is a financial services group in South Africa offering wholesale and retail banking services as well as insurance, asset management, and wealth management. It is one of the four largest banks in South Africa, with 7 million customers, of which 2.3 million are digitally active. At the International Banking awards last year, Nedbank received five accolades, including Best Banking Platform and Most Innovative Digital Products Branch Design.

Building a Logical Data Warehouse (LDW)

As a bank that serves a large customer base and prioritizes the innovation of its products and services, Nedbank always valued the importance of data and analytics for achieving the right business outcomes. Nedbank's legacy data warehouse used to load six terabytes of data into its operational data store and data marts on a daily basis. The sheer amount of data was challenging for any IT infrastructure to process and manage, pushing Nedbank to implement a single interface for accessing data using the Denodo Platform.

Soon after that, Nedbank virtualized its entire legacy data warehouse, a target state data lake, and several data marts and business data stores, effectively making the Nedbank Denodo implementation one of the largest, if not the largest, logical data warehouse on the planet. Nedbank achieved significant efficiencies combining the data sources through the logical data warehouse and spearheaded a series of new data-driven initiatives.
