Palo Alto, CA, May 23, 2017 - Denodo, the leader in data virtualization, today announced that Ultra Mobile, one of the fastest growing mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs) based in the U.S., has implemented the Denodo Platform to support their agile BI initiative. As a part of the company’s larger effort to modernize its enterprise data architecture, the new agile BI platform has helped Ultra Mobile gain greater insight into the cost of goods used and align their marketing budget in higher growth regions.
“Thanks to the data virtualization layer, we have achieved a consistent and solid dataset that allows stakeholders to collaborate, which has led us to discover many opportunities that had been hidden in the weeds of the data swamp,” said Mike Burkes, VP of Enterprise Information Management at Ultra Mobile. “The business impact has been significant and most evident in the areas of profitability and quality of service. Since implementing Denodo to support our agile BI efforts, we have improved profitability, and our quality-of-service delivery has improved as much as 22 percent in some international regions.”

Ultra Mobile’s initial rapid growth led the company to perform ad-hoc application development practices which resulted in siloed datasets. Although Ultra Mobile’s information platform leveraged modern technologies such as Hadoop for data warehousing, data was proliferating too quickly for them to build application-specific capabilities. This limited the company’s ability to analyze the data, ultimately compromising the value of the platform itself. The Ultra Mobile team created its next-generation data architecture using a combination of the Denodo Platform for data virtualization; Looker as the primary delivery layer; and Tableau, and Power BI as the analytical tools. As a result, the Ultra Mobile team has increased information confidence and performance by establishing data delivery and governance best practices, and by ensuring the right data is delivered at the right time.
“Ultra Mobile’s implementation of the Denodo Platform enabled them to move from siloed spreadsheet-based reports with very little data lineage, to a process-driven, governed, consistent view of the data,” said Ravi Shankar, Chief Marketing Officer at Denodo. “Using data virtualization, Ultra Mobile was able to increase speed-to-market value, reduce cost of storage, and better manage data replication and collaboration across multiple views. As Ultra Mobile embarks on the next phase of innovation to maximize its customer lifetime value, we look forward to helping them achieve their goal with the use of unique features such as dynamic query optimization, and self-service discovery and search capabilities of the Denodo Platform.”
